A Working Vacation in Bermuda… Ends in Victory

a happy team after the stage one crit victory
A happy team after the Stage One crit victory

The Webcor Builders Women's Cycling Team capped off a tremendous season with a GC victory in Bermuda! Karen Brems, with much help from her teammates, fought a ferocious battle in the last stage, a very technical criterium, to come up with the GC win. Congratulations to the whole team – what a great way to end a great season! See the Photos page for more shots.

While half of the Webcor Women's team is racing for the US and Canada in Madrid at the World Championships, the other half is enjoying the final race of the Women's Prestige Series, the 4-stage Bermuda Grand Prix. The team consists of Karen Brems, new team member Amber Rais, Cat Malone, and Betina Hold. Karen repeated her victory of last year in Stage One, which is similar to her favorite local race – Cat's Hill. Read Karen's report for the thrilling details! Karen wins stage three and holds the lead in GC!

September News from Abroad

All three of the USA team members finished in the top 10 of the Word Championship Time Trial in Madrid on September 21. Webcor's Christine Thorburn came up short of her goals, but still took the number 8 spot. See the results and read Christine's report.

Meanwhile, on the international scene, Erinne Willock is in Europe competing with the Canadian National Team in the four remaining World Cup races prior to the World Championships, which will be held September 21-25 in Madrid, Spain. Erinne finished 15th on the hard course in Wales (see results), and again captured 15th place on the hard course in Plouay, France (see results). These are excellent results as the European peloton is now fit and doing final preparations for Worlds. Also, many of the national teams are basing their World's team selections on these results, so there are many motivated women out there! Felicia Greer will join her Canadian teammates the week of the World's time trial.

Katheryn Curi and Christine Thorburn are in Europe competing with the United States National Team in a 5-day stage race in France, the Tour Cycliste Feminin Ardeche Rhone-Alpes Sud. Then Katheryn will do the Giro della Toscana the week before the World's races, while Christine will (hopefully) be doing final preparations for the World's time trial on September 21st (team is not yet announced). The elite women's Northern California/Nevada district road race title has been in the "Webcor family" for the past two years with Felicia Greer winning last year and Christine Thorburn in 2003 (although in a Palo Alto Bicycles jersey!). This year, with Katheryn Curi still back east, Christine recovering from Altoona and preparing for track nationals, Felicia getting married the night before, and Cat Malone, Kim Boester, and Yukie Nakamura still on the injured list, Webcor fielded a relatively small team of Stefanie Graeter, Betina Hold, and Karen Brems. Karen demonstrated that she can still dominate the local scene by winning the title, thanks to a great leadout by teammate Betina. Read the details in Karen's race report.

Webcor Wraps up Women's Prestige Series Titles

Webcor won the Women's Prestige Series individual GC (Christine Thorburn), young rider (Erinne Willock) and team GC titles at the Tour de Toona. See this great team photo.

Since there is no race for the women at the San Francisco International this year, Altoona was their final race as a complete team this season. Christine and Katheryn will be going with the US National team to Europe in September to do a few races to prepare for the World Championships in Madrid. Erinne will do the same with the Canadian squad, and Felicia is still in limbo as Canada's alternate for the individual time trial (it is rumored that Genevieve Jeansen will give up her spot).

Tour de Toona Final

7.31.05 Alas, in the final stage, Genevieve Jeansen pulled ahead to win the overall by ONE second over Webcor's Christine Thorburn. This photo says it all. The team maintained their commanding lead, however, to win the overall team classification, helped by Erinne Willock's 5th place in GC. Other finishers include Stefanie Graeter in 23rd, Katheryn Curi in 37th, Felicia Greer in 38th, and Betina Hold in 48th place. Read Christine's final race report.

7.29.05 In Stage Five, the Webcor women successfully defended the yellow jersey going into a tough weekend with big climbs on Saturday and tight cornering on Sunday. Read Stefanie Greer's race report.

7.26.05 The Webcor women are now in central Pennsylvania racing the longest – and probably hardest – stage race in North America for the women. This is a 7-day, 7-stage race where the women race the same distances as the men for the same (maybe more this year?) prize money. This year's peloton is chocked full of the best women on the NRC circuit. There is even a French team here and a few riders from European teams racing as guests on US teams. It is also the 3rd in the 4-part Women's Prestige Series, which Webcor is leading as individual GC (Christine), young rider (Erinne), and as team. We are hoping to maintain these titles. It is also the last time this group will be together this season since San Fran has no women's race. Then several of us will be heading to Europe for the final prep before the World Championships in Madrid the last week of September.

Stage 1: Downtown 3.2-mile time-trial with 14 turns and a couple big-ring rollers – more like an extended crit course, and in fact, we did do the Sunday's crit course as part of it. We opted for road bikes with clip-on's, and I'm still not sure if that or TT bikes were better. We all felt pretty good, but a little sluggish from both the heat and our travel the day before. Christine Thorburn tried her best on the corners, but it is not her forte. She finished 4th, but lost 15 seconds to Kristin Armstrong, who took the overall; she is an excellent prologue rider and fantastic on the corners. A little surprisingly, her teammate Kim Baldwin was 2nd @ 6 seconds, and Genevieve was 3rd @ 8 seconds. Erinne Willock had a good ride to finish 10th, but only 21 seconds out from Kristin. Felicia Greer was only another 6 seconds back in 18th place. Betina Hold and Katheryn Curi were same-time in 27th and 29th and Stefanie Graeter came in 40th but still with a good time.

Stage 2: This is a 3-lap "circut race" for a total of 63 miles on rolling terrain. The biggest obstacle was the 103-degree heat at 1pm when we started! Traditionally, this race ends in a field sprint and today was no different. There were two intermediate sprints for the points competition (not time) and two QOM sprints to spice things up a little, but overall it was a rather boring and uneventful race. Most, including ourselves, were conserving for tomorrow's big climbing stage. Christine and Erinne made big efforts to be in the mix for the final sprint, but in the end we were just happy to have all of our skin after all the bumping and swearing that transpired. Ina (T-Mobile) won, Tina Pic (Quark) was 2nd, and Gina Grain (Victory Brewing) was 3rd. We all finished with the same time. Tomorrow is one of the near 100-mile stages with lots of climbing.

Stage 1 – Time Trial, 6.8.05

The Webcor women embarked on their second women's prestige series stage race today. The first stage was held on the riverfront of the Mississippi in St. Paul. Riders completed 4.5 kilometers. The course began mostly flat but climbed a little bit up to the turn-around. It seemed windy in both directions. Our super time trialer Christine Thorburn posted the fastest time of the day at 9min 33sec, 14 seconds ahead of second place Kimberely Baldwin. The rest of the team road extremely strong as well today; Katheryn Curi finished 5th, Erinne Willock 8th, Felicia Greer 10th, Cat Malone 35th, and Stefani Graeter just making the top half. Erinne took the young riders jersey as well. Tomorrow will be a long road stage finishing on hilly downtown circuits and including some heavy time bonuses. Liberty Classic

June 5 was the Liberty Classic in downtown Philadelphia. This race is what the San Francisco Grand Prix was patterned after. They completely close off the downtown area and half a million fans line the streets. The men and women are on the course at the same time, meaning the women actually get their fair share of TV coverage and spectators. This is the richest 1-day women's race in the country, with the win worth $12K (the men's winner gets $40K).

This year we had 200 women in the field from 27 teams from around the world! This was actually larger than the men's field that only had 150 riders or so. Webcor had a team of 7 riders: Christine Thorburn, Erinne Willock, Felicia Greer, Katheryn Curi, Stefanie Graeter, Cat Malone, and me (Karen Brems) managing from the saddle.

Navagating through a field of 200 riders is a bit challenging and the first lap is always pretty nervous. The women do four laps of the course that includes the Manayunk wall: a steep, half mile climb, and two shorter climbs up to Strawberry Mansion and Lemon Hill. The climbs alone are not enough to split the field and the race traditionally comes down to a massive field sprint, won seven times by Petra Rossner. Petra finally retired this year (and is directing the Nurnberger team) so we knew there might be more possibilities for a breakaway if the right combination of teams got away.

Webcor doesn't have a field sprinter, so we would be happier with any of us in a break with just about anyone else, than a field sprint. The plan was to race aggressively starting with the 3rd climb up the wall. There is also a QOM competition with points on Manayunk and Lemon Hill. Erinne won this last year, so we also wanted to support her in that.

The first time up the wall, Judith Arndt of Nurnberger opened up a gap on about 10 riders in front of her near the top. There were three T-Mobile riders (Kristen Armstrong, Kimberly Baldwin, and Ina Tuetenburg), two Webcors (Christine and Erinne), Anette Buetler of Quark, Oenone Wood of Nurnberger, Lynn Gaggioli of Monex, Dostie Cowden of Colavita, and maybe one or two others. Katheryn, Mari Holden (T-Mobile), and I were all right behind Judith and had teammates up front, so we also sat up and spread out across the road. By the bottom of the descent, the front group was out of sight and nobody was organizing a chase. It was pretty early, but we had our two strongest riders up the road, so they rolled with it. Kimberly Baldwin was the main driver of the break.

The break gained up to about 45-50 sec., but it soon became apparent that Nurnberger wasn't happy with only Oenone in the break, so they sent Madeline Lindberg and Olivia Gollan to the front. Quark was also not happy with their two strongest sprinters, Tina and Laura back in the field, so they started helping the chase. By the bottom of the wall, the break was in sight and Judith put in a hard effort on the climb and led a group of about 7-8 riders up to the break, including myself, Mari, Tina, Laura, and a few others.

By Strawberry mansion, a lead group of about 17 riders had formed with a gap of about 20 sec. It was mostly the riders from the original break minus Dotsie who was dropped, and Annette, who flatted, and then the bridge group. Webcor had three riders (Christine, Erinne and I), Nurnberger had three (Oenone, Judith, and Regina Schleicher), T-Mobile had four (Kimberly, Mari, Kristen, and Ina), Quark had two (Tina Pic and Laura Van Guilder), Nobili Rubinetteri had three (Edita Pucinskaite, Joanne Keisanowski, and Sigrid Corneo). Lyne Gaggioli was there solo and Amy Moore from Victory Brewing, and maybe one or two others. Basically all the strongest teams had their strongest riders and sprinters in the group, so there wasn't a lot of incentive or horsepower in the pack to chase except from Colavita and Victory whose top sprinters, Gina Grain and Rochelle Gillmore, had missed the move.

Kimberly Baldwin was still drivng the break. I asked Christine and Erinne how they were feeling and Christine felt good and Erinne felt bad – she had 17 stitches from her crash on Thursday in the Tour of Montreal and that seriously hampered her recovery from racing 15 days out of the past 3 1/2 weeks!

I told Christine to sit on and Erinne and I went to the front to drive the break along with Kimberly, Mari, and Sigrid. All the others were sitting on as well except Edita who took a few token pulls. By the base of the 3rd time up Manayunk, we had about 1 min. on the field. Christine had now taken over QOM duty from Erinne and placed in or won all the sprints to wrap up that title. I was pretty much done (done for!) at this point and dropped off the group on Manayunk. Erinne and Mari came off a bit higher up the climb but were able to chase back onto the group on the descent. Erinne continued to work for another lap in the break. I recovered a bit until I was caught by the next goup of 50-60 riders which had Katheryn, Felicia, and Cat all riding strongly near the front.

The gap to the break remained fairly constant at around 1 min for the rest of the race. Victory Brewing and Colavita were doing most of the chasing with a few token pulls from Subway. Erinne and Mari came out of the break for good the last time up Manayunk and were swept up by our chase group, but the rest of the break of 14 riders stayed together to the end. Christine won the QOM sprint on Lemon Hill, which is about 3km from the finish. She had a slight gap, but not enough to hold. Judith tried to go with about 2km to go and Christine tried to follow her and counter, but too many QOM sprints had taken their toll on her legs and she could not get a gap. In the final 500m, Kristen led out Ina and Tina led out Laura and it was Ina who took the win over Regina Schleigher and Laura.

In additional to her QOM title, Christine ended up 12th. She also won the two cash primes for $500 each on the start/finish line on the 2nd and 3rd lap! Cat, Felica, Katheryn, Erinne, and I were all in the group of 50 or so riders sprinting for 15th place. It was a pretty hairy sprint as usual for this race. I didn't have a whole lot left and I got my bars bumped and lost postition with about 300m to go. I ended up 41st, Cat 45th, Katheryn 50th, Felicia 56th and Erinne 60th. Stefanie unfortunately got caught behind a crash on the first lap and never made it back to the field.

World Cup in Montreal

The Webcor women's team of Christine Thorburn, Stefanie Graeter, Erinne Willock, Betina Hold, Felicia Greer, and Katheryn Curi raced round seven of the women's World Cup in Montreal on Saturday, May 28. This is the only World Cup cycling race for men or women in North America. It is also the toughest course on the women's World Cup circuit with 12 trips up the steep 2km Mount Royale. Erinne will be sending out an inside view of the race in the next couple of days, but in short, the team rode extremely well against a star-studded international field and placed two riders in the top 10 with Erinne in 6th and Christine in 8th as the top American rider. The current World Cup leader and two-time World Road Champion, Susanne Ljungskog, came with her Buitenpoort-Flexpoint team and World Cup number two, Oeone Wood, was there with her extremely strong Nurnberger team including reigning World Champion Judith Arndt riding in a domestique role.

With both Susanne and Oeone being strong sprinters with strong teams to control the field, it was mostly the course that whittled down the field to about 20 riders for the final drag race up the climb. This seems to suit Canadian Genevieve Jeanson who has won this race three times before and two of them being in a sprint at the top of the climb. Erinne jumped first with 300m to go, but Jeanson was on her wheel and came around to take the win by something like 15 meters over Oeone Wood. Mirjam Melchers from Holland was 3rd, 4 sec. back. Oeone took over the World Cup lead from Susanne who was 5th.

4.16.05 Sea Otter Final

The final stage of the Sea Otter Classic was a tough one: seven times up the "Barloy Wall," a steep 1km climb used in the NorCal Districts road race and a final climb up 2.3-mile Barloy Canyon up to the Laguna Seca track. 84 miles of hills and wind. Webcor likes tough courses though, so the team was ready to go on the offensive to improve on Christine Thorburn's 3rd place on GC going into the stage. Christine started the day 11 sec. down on Tina (Quark) and 7 sec. down on Kristin. Time bonuses alone would not be enough to take over the lead – she had to make some time on Tina on the final climb.

The attacks started already on lap 2 and a break formed with Webcor's Felicia Greer, Mari Holden (T-Mobile), Grace Flury (Quark), Rebecca Larson (Colavita), Lynn Gaggioli (Monex), and Nicole Demars (Victory Brewing). All the major teams were represtented and the break was fairly equally balanced, so there was good cooperation in the break and not much chasing from the field and the gap quickly grew to about 2 min 30 sec. Only Grace was sitting on the break in defense of Tina's yellow jersey.

By lap 4, the gap was still around 2 min. and then confusion started as the men's field and men's caravan had to pass the women's field, caravan, and break. The men had started only 15 min. behind the women. The 2 caravans were totally intermingled for about 2 laps. The women's race commissaires couldn't see enough to give time splits and all the women's the team directors were pretty much in the dark for about 2 laps. The men's field and the women's break passed and re-passed each other several times.

Quark started getting nervous about the time gap and went to the front of the field. Going into the Barloy wall for the 5th time, T-Mobile's "Ina the incredible" attacked the descent and up the wall. She made it up to the break with the head of the field including Chrisitne, Erinne not far behind. Nobody in the break wanted to work with Ina, and Lynn and Mari got dropped from the break and Nicole had had a flat a bit earlier and dropped from the break as well, leaving only 4 riders in front, including Felicia. Ina attacked the break and Felicia covered her. Then Ina attacked again and Felicia, after being in the break for 30 miles couldn't respond. Ina very quickly gained about 40 sec. on the break with Felicia, Rebecca, and Grace chasing hard. This was a dangerous move for Webcor since the field with Christine and Erinne was another 1:20 behind Felicia's group and almost 2 min. behind Ina.

Katheryn, Erinne, and Betina and Quark drove the chase from the field and then Christine attacked to try to bridge. She took Tina (Quark) and Kristin (T-Mobile) with her. Kristin of course sat on. Once Christine's group got in sight of Felicia's, Felicia stopped working so the two groups could then work together to catch Ina. Felicia's group got caught on the last time up Barloy and Felicia gave a brave fight to try to latch on to the group and was oh-so-close over the top but just couldn't quite close the gap after being off the front for 5 laps. Only Grace, who had been sitting on the break all day made the front group from the original break.

Now it was 2 Quark riders, and Christine chasing Ina, who still had a 40 sec. gap and Kristin sitting on. As soon as Ina's gap started coming down, Christine stopped working to try to recover since she still had a fresh Kristin to worry about on the climb. Tina also needed to save for the climb, so it was her teammate Grace doing the bulk of the work.

Going into the final climb up Barloy Canyon, Ina had about 15-20 sec. on the three chasers and the field was 3-4 min. back. As the climb steepened, Christine attacked hard. Kristin and Tina were able to grab her wheel right away though and then Kristin countered and nobody could respond. Kristin caught and passed Ina and got 30 sec. on Christine and Tina in lass than half a mile. By the top of the climb, she had over a minute. Christine and Tina chased hard and passed Ina, but Kristin's fresh legs were just too much for them. Kristin won the stage and the overall with Tina in 2nd 1:27 back and Christine in 3rd at 1:29. Ina held onto 4th, Grace held onto 5th and Felicia stayed in front of the field for 6th, 7:11 behind Kristin.

Erinne led the remainder of the field in for 7th at 8:11. Katheryn was in the bunch for 20th at 8:37 and Betina was only just behind in 31st by about 30 sec. Cat did a huge amount of work in the first 4 laps and came in with a small group in 41st. Final GC was almost the same as the stage placings with Christine in 3rd, Felicia in 6th and Erinne in 9th. In Team GC, Webcor took 3rd behind T-Mobile and Quark.

Christine's and the teams's 3rd overall was the same place as last year, but what a difference a year makes! Last year we were the underdog team, happy to make the podium. This year, we came into the race as THE team to beat with two stage race wins in the past month. Overall, the team raced very well together and rode strongly, but T-Mobile just rode even stronger this weekend. Bike racing is just like that sometimes!

4.15.05 Sea Otter Classic Day One

Six members of the Webcor women's team are contesting the 3-stage Sea Otter Classic: Christine Thorburn, Erinne Willock, Betina Hold, Katheryn Curi, Felicia Greer, and Cat Malone. The Prologue was 1/2 a lap of the Laguna Seca Raceway. Unfortunately for Webcor, they chose the 2nd half of the lap, which starts at the top of the corkscrew and goes downhill to the finish. It was a 3-minute effort where descending and cornering skills were a premium. T-Mobile's Kristin Armstrong won in 3:04, followed by Ina Tuetenberg (T-Mobile) and Candice Blickem (Quark). Tina Pic was 4th after being penalized 1 sec. for false starting (she would have won otherwise). Webcor's Christine was 10th in 3:09, Felicia was 23rd in 3:16, Erinne was 34th in 3:19, Cat was 40th in 3:22, Betina was 50th in 3:25 and Katheryn was 53rd @3:26. Felicia and Christine inproved their times by about 10 and 15 sec. respectively over last year by not using their brakes this year!

Prologue results

Stage One was 17 full laps of the Laguna Seca circuit for a total of about 5000 ft. of climbing in 35 miles. This was much more to Webcor's liking! After a few laps of tempo riding at the front by T-Mobile, the attacks started fast and furious. Cat, Katheryn, and Felicia covered all the earlier significant moves. Erinne played the role of Energizer Bunny the 2nd half of the race covering attack after attack from T-Mobile. Ina Tuetenberg was particularly aggressive as is her style. She got in a short break around the half way point with Erinne and Laura Van Guilder (Quark) but nobody was interested in working with her. With 3 laps to go, a break of 8 got away including Erinne and Christine from Webcor, Kristin and Ina from T-Mobile, Tina Pic from Quark, Lynne Gaggioli form Monex, and one more. It was too big a group to really commit to working together and nobody really wanted to bring Tina and Ina to a sprint, so after 1 1/2 laps, the remains of the field were back together with 1 lap to go.

On the last lap, Erinne put in a blistering attack at the start of the climb and shattered what was left of the field. At the turn onto the steeper part of the climb, Christine made her move and took Tina and Kristin with her. Erinne was amazingly able to latch on over the top of the climb giving Webcor 2 riders in 4. With 1km to go, Erinne drove the group to try to put maximum time on Ina who missed the move. Tina won the sprint with Kristin 2nd and Christine 3rd. Erinne held onto 4th, about 5 sec. back, and a group of 22 riders including Katheryn and Felicia was 11 sec. back. Cat was in the next group at 35 sec.

This puts Tina in the overall lead with Kristin at 4 sec. and Christine in 3rd at 11 sec. Ina is 4th at 21 sec. Erinne and Felicia are 14th and 15th at 30 sec. and 34 sec. respectively.

Tomorrow is a very hard 84 mile stage in Ft. Ord with 7 laps up the Barloy Wall and then 1 trip up Barloy Canyon to the track and finishing with 1 lap of the Laguna Seca course including the climb.

4.3.05 Redlands Final

Christine Thorburn on podium at Redlands

The pressure was definitely on going into the final stage with the top 3 GC riders only 7 sec. apart and 13 sec. of time bonuses up for grabs. I don't think there has ever been a Redlands this close! Even 4th (Erinne Willock) and 5th (Kristin) were less than a minute down!

The first QOM was only 7 miles into the race and that was also the time bonus sprint. With the sprint so early, there was really no time to get a break-away off to swallow up the time bonuses, so Webcor had no choice but to make it as much like a climb and as little like a sprint as possible! The team did a great job driving the pace up as soon as the neutral section out of town was over. With 300m to go, Erinne attacked hard and got a good gap which she held to the line picking up the 3 sec. bonus. Annette (Quark) had no choice but to chase Erinne with Christine Thorburn on her wheel and Christine was able to slip around at the line for 2nd place and 2 sec. Anette was 3rd for 1 sec. Now Christine's lead was up to 8sec.

The sprint was hard enough that the top 6 riders: Chrisitne and Erinne, Kimberly and Kristen from T-Mobile, Anette and Lynn Gaggioli (Monex) got a gap and kept it going. Lynn had the most to gain from the break and did the bulk of the work.

With few strong teams left to chase, the gap grew to over a minute and lasted a lap or 2. Victory Brewing finally brought the group almost back when T-Mobile's Ina Tuetenburg attacked from the group, bridged to the break and rode right through them off the front alone. This was fine with Webcor since Ina was no threat on GC and if she took the time bonus for the win, Christine's lead was safe as long as she finished on the same time as Annette.

Ina held on for the win by almost a minute, which also gave T-Mobile the lead on Team GC over Webcor. The real drama however, was the sprint for 2nd. The finish is a long, fast gradual downhill for several miles, followed by 4 tight turns in the last 500m, using the same finish as the criterium. Tina Pic (Quark) lead out Annette, but in the jostling through the turns, Christine lost Annette's wheel and Kori Seehafer (Quark) opened a gap in front of her through the turns to Tina and Annette. Anette took the sprint for 2nd with Tina right behind. Christine basically had to do the sprint of her life to close the gap so there wouldn't be any time difference. If there is more than 1 second between any 2 riders at the finish, then the finish time for each of them will be the time of the first rider of their group to cross the line. The clock ticks as all the riders in a group cross the line, so if a group is big, a 1 second gap to the wheel in front of you can actually turn into many seconds on official finish time. Christine finished 5th on the day behind Amy Moore (Victory Brewing) with a small gap in front of her, but not enough for the officials to count it, so everyone was given the same time and Christine held onto her lead by a scant 2 seconds!

Webcor had 2 more riders in the top 10 with Erinne in 4th and Katheryn Curi in 7th. Felicia Greer finished 19th after sacrificing her own race for the team on Oak Glen. Another interesting note on Oak Glen was Cat Malone, who, after riding on the front for the bulk of the first 50 miles of the race, was dropped from the lead group a bit before the start of the final climb. With about 4km to go, she got a flat but the Webcor car and apparently all the neutral support cars as well, were up with the front of the race. Another team car who didn't have riders in the front went by and gave her a spare tube. Cat had to fix the flat herself and finished just 40 seconds in front of the time cut!

The Redlands Classic is definitely one of the premier stage races in the US for women and the victory was a total team effort throughout the race with everyone playing a part, including the Webcor staff of Carmen D'Aluisio (Director), Karen Williams (Mechanic) and Rachel Lloyd (Soigneur).

4.2.05 Webcor Women Still in Yellow at Redlands

The Webcor Builders women's team all survived the 60-minute technical downtown criterium with the rubber side down and successfully defended the leader's jersey for another day with only one more stage remaining.

T-Mobile's Ina Tuetenburg was again on the attack and got away twice during the race. The 2nd time Andrea Radkovic (The Bicycle Store) came along and that was the move that stuck for good with Ina taking the win.

The Webcor team marked the top GC riders to make sure none escaped. There were 2 time bonus sprints midway and Quark's Annette Buetler took 2nd in one of them, picking up a valuable 2 sec, bringing her up to only 7 sec. behind Christine Thorburn. At the finish, Quark's Tina Pic took the field sprint for 3rd, collecting the last time bonus of the day.

Tomorrow is the 60-mile rolling Sunset RR with 1 time bonus sprint on lap 1 (3,2,1 sec) and time bonuses of 10, 6, 4 sec at the finish. Kimberly Baldwin is 6 sec. down on Christine and Annette is 7. Erinne Willock is 4th at 45 sec.

4.1.05 Webcor Women Still Leading Redlands

Today was the pivotal Oak Glen stage of the Redlands Classic. This stage is basically 70 miles of flat/rolling hills and then an 8-mile climb to the finish. You don't fare well on GC without a good finish at Oak Glen! The Webcor Builders women's team rode a textbook race to protect Christine Thorburn's GC lead from the prologue.

As expected, T-Mobile's Ina Tuetenburg attacked early. Nobody joined her though and she rode alone in the Santa Ana winds for more than 30 miles. Her lead was a maximum of about 2 min. but Webcor's
Stefanie Graeter and Cat Malone rode tempo at the front to keep the gap in check.

The wind eventually took its toll and Ina came back to the group. 15 miles or so from the base of the climb, the next significant break got off with Tina Pic (Quark), Mari Holden (T-Mobile), Chrissy Ruiter (Basis),
Katheryn Curi (Webcor) and a couple of others. Tina was the top GC rider in the break, starting the day about 30 sec. behind Christine. Katheryn earned a free ride on the break due to her teammate in yellow. The lead grew to over 2 minutes with Stefanie and Cat still on the front of the peleton. Now Mari started sitting on the break as well and Webcor brought Felicia Greer to the front of the peleton for added horsepower. The gap started coming down, but the break was still away at the base of the climb with Felicia still going strong on the front of the chase group.

Tina attacked the break and only Katheryn could follow. The remains of the break were then caught by what was left of the peleton, led now by
Erinne Willock. By the time Katheryn and Tina were caught with 4-5km to go, the group was down to the elite climbers: Christine and Erinne of Webcor, Kimberly and Kristen of T-Mobile and Annette Beutler of Quark. The attacks were fast and furious and eventually Christine, Annette and Kimberly separated themselves from the rest with Annette taking the stage by about 10 s. over Kimberly and 11 sec. over Chistine. Erinne finished 5th and Katheryn hung on for 7th.

Overall, Christine now has a 6 sec. lead over Kimberly and 9 sec. over Annette. Erinne moved up to 4th at 45 sec. and Katheryn moved up to 7th at 2:23. With 3 riders in the top 10, Webcor now also has a significant lead on Team GC.

Tomorrow is the downdown criterium with some time bonuses up for grabs and the top 3 riders separated by less than 10 seconds! Stay tuned for an exciting race!

3.31.05 News Flash: Webcor Women in Yellow at Redlands

Webcor Builders' Christine Thorburn just won the prologue hillclimb TT at the Redlands Classic in gusting windy conditions. No official times yet, but she was about 4 sec. ahead of T-Mobile's Kristen Armstrong. Webcor's Erinne Willock was 5th and Felicia Greer was 10th. Katheryn Curi, Stefanie Graeter, and Cat Malone were also all in the top 30.

Webcor, Quark and T-Mobile all have 2-3 riders in the top 10, so it will be an exciting race. Tomorrow is the famous Oak Glen stage ending on an 8-mile climb that is sure to shake up GC a bit.

3.20.05 Webcor Women Win San Dimas Stage Race

Stage 3 of the San Dimas Stage Race was a 55-minute criterium with 2 10 sec. time bonus sprints plus a 20 sec. bonus for the stage win. Erinne Willock had a 29 sec. lead over 2nd place Kristin Armstrong in the GC (General Classification). They were in a good position in that the pure sprinters were likely to take the finish time bonuses and the intermediate bonuses were not enough for anyone else to take over the lead. As long as the field stayed together, Erinne's jersey was fairly secure.

Christine Thorburn
was only 7 sec. out of 3rd and 6 sec. out of 2nd, so the plan was for her to go for the time bonuses and get herself on the podium. In the first sprint, Tina Pic (Quark) won and Kristin was 3rd, moving her 3 sec. closer to Erinne and farther from Christine. In the 2nd sprint, Christine got into better position and took 2nd to Tina while Kristin was again 3rd. This moved Christine 1 sec. from Kimberly Baldwin in 3rd.

Erinne rode the whole race in the "sweet spot" of 3rd-10th position, looking very comfortable and marking the only riders she had to, Kimberly and Kristin. Katheryn Curi did a great job of covering attacks and helping to keep the field together. Both Quark and Victory Brewing were also happy with a field sprint for their top sprinters, so a field sprint it was. Quark did a lead-out for the whole last lap that was so fast there were several splits in the field. Tina and Laura Van Guilder (both Quark) went 1-2 at the finish with Magen Long in 3rd. Tina won every sprint she contested both today and yesterday! She went from 13th to 5th on GC just on time bonuses.

Overall it was a great showing for Webcor, with 4 riders in the top 11 overall. The team rode very well together and you know you have a strong team when your Olympian is riding in a support role!
Final GC

1 Erinne Willock (Webcor Builders) 3.44.41
2 Kristin Armstrong (T-Mobile) 0.23
3 Kimberly Baldwin (T-Mobile) 0.30
4 Christine Thorburn (Webcor Builders) 0.31
5 Tina Pic (Quark Cycling Team) 1.01
6 Annette Beutler (Quark Cycling Team) 1.12
7 Stefanie Graeter (Webcor Builders) 1.32
8 Lynn Gaggioli (Monex) 1.35
9 Dotsie Cowden (Colavita/Cooking Light) 1.50
10 Kirsten Robbins (Victory Brewing) 2.13
11 Katheryn Curi (Webcor Builders) 2.17

Erinne and Christine ended up 2nd and 3rd in the sprint points competition and Erinne was 3rd in the Queen of the Mountain (QOM).

3.19.20 Webcor Women Winning San Dimas Stage Race

The Webcor Builders Women's team has just finished the 2nd stage of their first NRC stage race of the season, the 3 stage San Dimas Stage race in (big suprise) San Dimas, CA. The team is Christine Thorburn, Erinne Willock, Katheryn Curi (4 weeks post collarbone break!), Betina Hold, Stefanie Graeter, and Yukie Nakamura.

Stage 1 was a 3.8 mile hillclimb TT. The rain started just about the time they drove up to the start and continued for the rest of the day. Temperature was in the mid 50s, so it made for a very cold descent at the finish for riders since the team cars were not allowed to go to the top. Complete Stage One results.

Stage 2 was a rolling circuit race of 8 7-mile laps with 3 QOM sprints and 2 time bonus sprints (worth 10, 6, 4 sec). There was also a 20 sec. time bonus at the finish. Given that Webcor's forte is climbing rather than sprinting, the team plan was to race as aggressively as possible and try to get a breakaway off with Christine or Erinne.

The riders started in a light rain that cintinued on and off most of the race. Betina and Yukie did a good job making and covering some early attacks and Christine took 2nd to Tina Pic (Quark) in the first time bonus sprint on lap 3, to gain 6 sec. Lap 5 was the 2nd bonus sprint and Webcor decided to make the whole lap hard to increase Christine's sprinting chances. Stefanie launched on the first climb of the course and stayed away for quite awhile. When she was caught, there were more counters from Webcor and others and then Stefanie launched again on the QOM climb. She was caught by the top, but then the sprinter's leadout trains took over and the pace stayed high. Tina took the sprint with Christine a very close 2nd. The sprinters then all sat up and Erinne, who was right on their wheels, made a perfectly timed counter-attack and got an immediate gap.

Erinne had 30 sec. by the first climb and 50 sec. by the QOM. A lap later she had 1:15 or so and took the 3rd time bonus. T-Mobile had only 2 riders left in the front group at this point (Kristen and Kimberly) and they just didn't have the horse power to close the gap. No other team really organized a chase. Webcor still had a full team of 6 in the front.

After 3 laps alone in the wind, Erinne held off the field by about 20 sec. for her first NRC win. She also picked up the 20 sec. time bonus, for a total gain of 50 sec. for the day and moved into the overall lead by about 30 sec. over Kristin. Christine moved ahead of Genevieve to stay in 4th overall, about 7 sec. out of 3rd. Complete Stage Two results.

Tomorrow is a 50 min. crit with 2 time bonus sprints and another time bonus for the finish.

Webcor Builders Announces Women's Roster

The Webcor Builders Women's team has finalized their roster for 2005. For the upcoming season, the Webcor
Builders Women's team will once again be headlined by reigning US National
TT Champion and Olympian, Christine Thorburn. In addition to the strong
support of returning riders: Felicia Greer, Stefanie Graeter, Cat Malone,
Betina Hold, Yukie Nakamura and Kim Boester, the team has added Katheryn
Curi
and Erinne Willock, both previously with RONA. Also returning from 2004
is team director and former National Criterium Champion, Carmen D'Aluisio.

"I don't think a lot of people realize just how strong Katheryn and Erinne
are. They are capable of winning races in their own right, but rode in
tireless support of their team leader all last year," said Webcor Builders
manager and former World TT Champion, Karen Brems. "The team is much more
balanced this year in terms of strength, and I think we have preserved the
great chemistry that got us our results last year. Katheryn and Erinne are a
perfect fit!" added Brems. That chemistry was exhibited when the team got
together in the San Francisco Bay Area for a weekend of low-key riding and a
fun evening at the Webcor Builders Company Holiday Party.

In 2004, the Webcor Builders Women's team was a group of motivated,
talented, but relatively inexperienced racers, all from Northern CA. It was
a first year team with a modest budget. Through dedication, learning and
teamwork, the team achieved success beyond anyone's wildest expectations.
Webcor Builders had 6 National Racing Calendar wins, several more national
podium appearances and put a rider on the US Olympic team. To build on that
success, Webcor Builders CEO Andy Ball made the decision to make the women's
team top priority for 2005. "The women's team had a fantastic season last
year, including Christine making the Olympic team. She was only beaten by 3
of the best women in the world at the Olympic Games," said Ball.

Look for the Webcor Builders women to build on that success in 2005 as they
hunt for the podium in select international races and National Racing
Calendar events throughout the US.
