How do you Go Green?
I worm compost all fruit and vegetable scraps (and use my shredded documents for the worm bedding!); recycle even when the city doesn’t provide receptacles; share one car with my husband; use cloth bags when grocery shopping; wash and reuse ziplock bags; when teaching high school my students learned about sustainable architecture and designed green buildings, created documentaries on global warming, did a 2-week intersession on alternative building materials, and even built an earthen oven from straw, clay, and dirt.

Athletics have always been my passion – from childhood through college. I found running, with its competition and team camaraderie, completely fulfilling. When I moved to San Diego six years ago, the athletic community seemed like a perfect fit, but nothing peaked my interest until my husband, Chad, convinced me to get a bike. Cycling started as a hobby and means of commuting, but I started craving larger challenges. In 2006, we joined Team in Training (TNT) to prepare for a century ride and the Mount Shasta Super Century. My competitive spirit was rekindled and I had a new athletic drive that was deeper than I had experienced with running. With the encouragement of my TNT coaches and mentor, I began to think about racing and, even before my first race, I dreamt of becoming a “pro.”
Through my hours in the saddle, I encountered the world-renowned coach, Dr. Arnie Baker. We were a good fit and we embarked upon working together to reach my goal. From my first race in January 2007, I was focused on making my dream of racing professionally a reality. I enjoyed participating in all types of races because it allowed me to learn from my more experienced peers and about my own strengths and weaknesses. From the start, I had positive and encouraging results.
Things really started to come together in July at my first NRC race, the Manhattan Beach Grand Prix – I won the Category 3/4 race and placed top 20 in the Pro/1/2/3 field just a few hours later. These early successes gave me the confidence to upgrade to a Category 2 and travel to events across the US to get a better feel for elite racing.
While racing in northern California, I met Karen Brems, and shortly after she invited me to guest ride for Webcor at the Bermuda Grand Prix. I was honored to receive the invitation and determined to take advantage of this incredible opportunity. In Bermuda, I was elated to help Webcor achieve their goals and also earn a place on the podium in the uphill time trial.
My “dream” truly has become a reality, and I look forward to working with Webcor and their sponsors this season!
