How do you Go Green?

I’m going without a car again; I carpool, recycle, use paper sparingly; I conserve water, and always turn off unused lights.

Born and raised in Victoria, British Columbia, Canada, I moved my racing career from the back yard to the local high school cycling series at age 14. For the first four years I tried track cycling, mountain bike cross-country, and road cycling. When I moved into the senior women's category, I decided to focus solely on the road, because the mountainous stage races and dynamic tactics suit my strengths perfectly. I haven't looked back since. Finishing my 13th year of competition, I have become a mainstay on the Canadian National Road Cycling Team, as well as the professional trade teams. I train at the Canadian Sport Centre Pacific in Victoria under the direction of National Team coach, Houshang Amiri.

In 2004, at the age of 22, I placed 3rd at the Canadian National Road Race Championships and bettered that in 2005 with a 2nd place finish.  In 2005, as a member of the Webcor Builders Women’s Cycling Team, I was untouchable in the “Best Young Rider” category and placed second overall in the Women’s Prestige Series. Over the past two years, I have proven myself as one of the strongest in the world. In September 2007, despite struggling through the year with a knee injury, I finished 16th in the lead group of riders at the World Championships.

2008 was a great year of racing and achieving goals with the Webcor Team. With their help, four of us made our Olympic Teams and Webcor was in Beijing alongside our families cheering us on. After completing a lifetime goal of making it to the Olympics, I feel very fortunate, but am still gearing up for more, and excited about new challenges.

While making a career for myself as a professional cyclist, I am also returning to University this winter to continue working on a Bachelors of Physical Education Degree at the University of Victoria. Teaching and coaching are a natural fit for me and I spend much of my time off the bike sharing my experience with kids and those new to the sport of cycling.
