Pomona Valley Race Report

by Lionel Syne

The Webcor cycling team is in Southern California, enjoying the sunshine and racing against a full contingent of the country's other pro teams for the first time this season.

Stage 3, a 96 mile road race around an 8-mile loop in a county park, has been the highlight so far. Our Belgian sensation, Lionel Syne clashed
wheels with the best sprinters in the nation and finished 2nd. He was extremely pleased but is now hungrier than ever for the win. Here's his report, written shortly after the exciting finale:

"The road race started with a 6 man break away with our man Patrick in it. The Saturn Team controlled the race before bringing it back after a couple of hours into the race. Then, attacks went all over the place as the pace was picking up. Hard time but I definitely felt strong and managed to stay in good position. By that time, I started to believe in my chances in a bunch sprint...just needed luck with me!

Last lap! Saturn is making the pace as (ex-world champion) Pate is off the
front. People are getting nervous and I have Patrick and Jake with me. It's getting crazy with 3k to go...everyone wants to be there but not much space...the guy in front of me swerves on the right and I have no choice but to pass him and get myself in the wind... Gord Fraser (Health Net Cycling Team) is in 3rd position on the left side of the road... I cross over to the right but as I sit next to him, he goes for it and gets a bike length on me...I follow but cannot get around him...2nd!!! Good...but one more to go and I promise you I'll get him, whoever he'll be next time! Thanks to all my teammates."
